Health authorities warn that Tal-Għażżenin Bay is not fit for swimming due to drainage outflow

The Superintendence of Public Health’s Environmental Health Directorate has urgently advised against swimming in the Tal-Għażżenin area of St. Paul’s Bay. The reason for this precaution is that bathers are at serious danger of serious health problems due to a sewage overflow that has compromised water quality.

To identify the source of the contamination, environmental health inspectors are presently conducting investigations. Officials are unable to forecast when the waters will be safe again, and the issue’s duration is yet unknown. To notify the public, warning signs have been placed around the impacted region. Only after testing show that the water quality has returned to safe levels will these signs be taken down, and the Directorate will then make another public notification.

Swimming in contaminated water can have detrimental effects on one’s health, such as respiratory problems, skin infections, and gastrointestinal disorders.Hazardous bacteria, viruses, and parasites can enter the body from sewage-contaminated water exposure and cause symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, and nausea.
